India Women ProjectHow would you like to shine a light to a better life for the women of India? India is one of the fastest developing countries in the world, yet gender divisions remain a pertinent problem.

Many of the women and young girls in India are poor and illiterate, falling prey to poverty, social division and superstitious beliefs. This project aims to help destitute women and girls in India by focusing on micro-financing.

Micro-financing builds self-reliance by developing skills in handicrafts such as knitting, making paper bags and stitching. Located in Jaipur, this project will give the women not just skills, but the confidence to earn their own living and also support their children’s education funding.

Volunteer in India in the Women’s Project, and empower the lives of women while taking in the colorful culture and rich history of India!

Volunteers’ Responsibilities

As a volunteer working with a women’s cooperative in India, a majority of your time will be spent with the local women. Depending on the individual’s skills and expertise, and the needs of the local staff, your daily duties include but are not limited to:

    • Offer support and assistance to disadvantaged women
    • Provide educational and practical skill guidance
    • Micro-finance development
    • Training in social skills
    • Informal and formal education
    • Teach the women basic business skills, entrepreneurial ideas and creative insight
    • Help the women with production and distribution methods

How You Can Make a Difference

This is a unique opportunity for you to observe and learn the process of making handicrafts, such as how handmade paper bags are produced, stitched and tailored. In addition, volunteers also have the opportunity to teach in the nearby school that is attended by children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

By being alongside the local women and children, you’ll gain an even better perspective on the plight of this group. By volunteering in India in the Women’s project, you’ll contribute to a variety of activities, from teaching English to skill development training.

Your contribution will, most importantly, build self-esteem, giving them the skills to lead a productive life with their heads held high and happiness in their hearts.

Skills and Qualifications

There are no specific qualifications needed to volunteer in the Women’s Project in India. However, volunteers are expected to be flexible and patient, as well as have much passion and empathy for the issues the women of today face.

Volunteers are also expected to have a basic knowledge of English, although an understanding of the Indian culture and Hindi language can be strengthened by enrolling in the week-long Language & Cultural Immersion program.
