The country may be the most developed country in the region, but its rich culture, flora and fauna, and its emergence from a turbulent past attract only more tourists each year. The country is also still slowly recovering from apartheid, which lasted almost 46 years. There are plenty of volunteering opportunities in the fields of education, health and social services in South Africa that aids the impoverished masses join the mainstream economy.
