Sri Lanka Teaching Volunteer Program

English have become very important for young children to learn with the growth of tourism, globalization and increase in trade and commerce. Often, a good ability to read and write in English will mean they can secure seats in good universities and later get well paid jobs. Although the local standard of English quite good in Sri Lanka, the poor who have to learn the language in schools, since it is not their native language, often find it hard to grasp the language. To make the matter worst, these schools the children of poor families attend are resource poor and can’t afford to hire well trained and experience teachers. Hence, our volunteers will help the children to improve their English skills. You’ll hold debates and discussions and also teach according to official curricular to make the children confident and capable of believing in them.

What difference does this project make?

By teaching English and other subjects if the volunteers want, you’ll be helping the children build their careers. Many students have benefits from volunteer teachers and many of them have gone on to get good grades and study in good universities. The contribution from volunteers is for all to see.

Highlights of the program

Teach English or other subjects, take part in extra-curricular activities and enjoy their company as well as the hospitalities of local people. In your free time, you can explore the local region and visit many national parks, beaches and ancient cities. During the program, volunteers will stay either in a hostel or with a host family. While living with a host family, volunteers will be able to learn about the culture of the place and make friends with local people. You’ll also be served local meals 3 times a day.

Project location

This project is located in Galle, a small, quiet town in the southern tip of the island. It’s a peaceful place but is a typical town in Sri Lanka. There are many things to see and do in Galle, including enjoying the beach, visiting fishing villages and other villages and historical sites.
