Rural schools in South Africa lack enough funds to deliver high quality education. Therefore, students in these schools face a bleak future as English is one of the national languages of South Africa and very important for very young student to master. That is why New Hope Volunteers, in collaboration with various educational institutions in South Africa, have been running this project to help the children catch with kids from privileged background. We place volunteers in resource poor schools to take English classes in primary, middle and high schools. Volunteers might also choose to assist local English teachers in their daily classes or volunteer to help children outside the classes by taking extra classes.
What difference does this project make?
This project will help students attending resource poor schools in rural South Africa get quality education in English. Improving their English will give them an excellent opportunity to build a better career for themselves. Your work as a volunteer will be highly appreciated by the students, schools as well as the parents. You will also enjoy teaching as the students are very enthusiastic about learning from an international volunteer.
Highlights of the program
In the schools, volunteers may choose to teach other subjects like (Math, Science, etc) besides teaching English. Your activities as a volunteer might include:
- Teaching conversational English, Math or Science to students aged 5 to 10-years-old primary school students or 11 to 16-years-old secondary school students
- Read literature for students
- Provide theoretical and practical assistance to teachers
- Interact with the students during lessons and free time
Also, in your free time, you can tour around most popular tourist destinations in South Africa.
Project location
This project is located in Cape Town, the capital city of South Africa. Besides, Stellenbosch, Albertinia, Knysna, Oudtshoorn & Riversdale are some other places you can choose to volunteer in rural schools. All of these places offer safe volunteering destination. And the scenic beauty you get to enjoy in places like these will make your stay even more worthwhile. |
