South Africa has been hard hit by large scale HIV/AIDS infection. Many victims are living without any medical treatment and have also become social outcast. Because of this disease, many children have also lost their parents. Our Local HIV/AIDS projects are fully supported by schools, churches, local clinics, social services and the district office for social development, as well as UNICEF. Volunteers will assist caretakers and work with HIV/AIDS support groups. Each support group is supervised by a group facilitator. Support groups run their own awareness programs. They present motivational talks at the prisons, juvenile centers, churches and any awareness events. Volunteers can also help in promoting workshops addressing how to live with a positive HIV/AIDS diagnosis and also addressing legalities and human right concerns surrounding HIV/AIDS patients.
What difference does this project make?
Volunteers will counsel HIV/AIDS infected people and help rehabilitate them in their family and society. This will strengthen the social structure. The support groups and awareness programs run by this project will restore self esteems in hopeless patients and their relatives. Also, the project will provide substantial help in checking the rapid spread of this disease.
Highlights of the program
Volunteers will care for HIV/AIDS infected patients and engage the community in educational and training activities to increase awareness and halt the spread of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Volunteers may utilize therapeutic story-telling to develop coping skills in survivors and families, depending on circumstances. Your work as a volunteer might include:
- Counseling people in hospitals and communities
- Encouraging active participation in HIV/AIDS preventive education among the community members
- Assisting community HIV/AIDS organizations with outreach programs such as hospice care, recreational and educational programs, voluntary HIV counseling and testing, and educational seminars and conferences about the virus
Project location
This project is located in Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa. This city is famous among travelers for its harbors and its natural setting in the Cape floral kingdom that includes well-known landmarks such as Table Mountain and Cape Point. As a volunteer, you’ll have a lot to learn from this city which falls among the most multicultural cities in the world. |
