Teaching Buddhist Monks in Nepal

Teaching is a rewarding job but teaching young monks is not just rewarding but you will also be able to learn about Buddhist culture and rituals of Nepal. Many of these monasteries are opened by Tibetan refugees who fled their homeland after China occupied Tibet. In the monasteries, large numbers of Buddhist monks live, study and practice the teachings of Buddha in their native language. They seldom have any opportunity to learn English. But as the interactions between people from the West and the monks have increased in recent years, it’s become very important to combine Buddhist studies with learning English language. Hence, the high monks of the monasteries are very happy to host international volunteers who will teach English to the monks. You’ll use various methods, including debates and discussions, to help increase the monks’ ability to comprehend English better. You’ll enjoy the work as the monks are very well behave and extremely eager to learn from international volunteer.

What Difference Does This Project Make?

There are increasing numbers of Western visitors in the monasteries of Nepal. They come to learn the philosophy and practice and many make donations through which the monasteries run. The interactions have increased in recent years and the monks and the people from West mostly communicate in English. But traditionally, the monasteries have never taught English to their monks. This is where international volunteers, who are either native English speakers or are fluent English speakers, will aid the monks in their English learning.

Program Highlights

In the program, volunteers will teach young monks in the monastery. The volunteers will also stay inside the monastery and also observe or participate in local festivals and rituals. In free time, volunteers can also travel around and even trek to see the Himalayas up close.

Project Location

Nepal is a country of matchless beauty. On the northern frontiers bordering Tibet, towering Himalayan draws visitors in thousands every year. As you travel south from there, you’ll pass countless snow fed rivers, deep ravines and gorges, green valleys and panorama of hills after hills. Nepal eventually ends on the flat plans that border India. In these lands, countless ethnic groups with their multitude of language and unique culture thrive. The project is located in Kathmandu, the capital and the largest city in Kathmandu.
