Volunteers will work as teaching assistants in schools that are operated by educational project of rural community. The school is near Delhi. The classes in the school are generally overcrowded and the school is always short on funds and can’t add more rooms and teachers. With volunteer’s help, the size can be reduced and managing the children will become much easier. Volunteers will teach from 8 am to 1pm and can also participate in extra-curricular activities. Volunteers who understand little Hindi can understand local mentality and work better. But volunteers without any knowledge of local language have also contributed equally effectively. To learn the local language, volunteers will have to join one week language and orientation class before the start of their program. Through the program, volunteers will learn about the local culture and the prevailing attitude and mentality of the local people. During the program, you’ll also tour historical and cultural sites.
What Difference Does This Project Make?
India’s poor and deprived rural tribal communities face many challenges; the socioeconomic progress being witnessed in other parts of India has not yet reached these areas and consequently the cycle of poverty continues unabated. They are also illiteracy and because of this, practices that are centuries like child labor and child marriages haven’t yet been eradicated. This project aims to focus on assisting in the education of future generations as a positive step forward in achieving sustainable community development. This program offers you the chance to help with the development and teaching of these local children, some of which would not have the chance to go to school without the support of volunteers.
Highlights of the program
Working as assistant teachers, you will help in the learning of the children and assist them wherever you can. You’ll also hold debates and discussions so that this will not only increase their ability to comprehend English but will also give them fresh ideas and knowledge. You can also participate in school’s extra-curricular activities or organize one yourself.
Project Location
This volunteer program is organized in Delhi and Jaipur. Delhi with its 13 million inhabitants is the India’s capital and contains a mix of old and new and is spread over a huge area. The city is divided in two parts: Old Delhi with its pulsating life through the crowded bazaars – and New Delhi, India’s modern capital, with Green Boulevard, large office blocks, the parliament etc. Jaipur is a popular place for tourists and contains many forts, palaces and buildings. It’s also a thriving economic center.Â
Field Conditions
The accommodation is basic but clean and located within easy access of the city and the project sites. Volunteers will be sharing rooms while staying in the hostel. The hostel has electricity, running water and volunteers will have access to internet and phone facilities within walking distance. Your country coordinator will help you if required any travel information.
During the project, you’ll mostly stay with a host family. There, you’ll find a warm and welcoming family and they’ll treat you as one of their family members. This will also provide volunteers with a wonderful opportunity to learn about the local culture and practice your newly acquired skills in Hindi language, though at least one member of the family will be able to speak in English. |
