The schools where the street children attend are large, overcrowded and short on funds. The teachers are underpaid and can sometimes lack the motivation. Volunteers will help the local teacher by assisting to control the class and ensure what is taught is understood by everyone. You will work mostly as teaching assistants, but as you gain in confidence and know your students well, you can teach on your own also. The schools are attended by children of tribal communities and they study in the morning from 9 am to 2 pm. The families are mostly very poor and educating their children, especially in English is very important if they are to escape poverty. Volunteers who understand little Hindi can understand local mentality and work better. But volunteers without any knowledge of local language have also contributed equally effectively. To learn the local language, volunteers can join one week language and orientation class before the start of their program. Through the program, volunteers will learn about the local culture and the prevailing attitude and mentality of the local people. During the program, you’ll also tour historical and cultural sites.
What Difference Does This Project Make?
India’s poor and deprived rural tribal communities face many challenges. The socio-economic progress being witnessed in other parts of India has not yet reached these areas yet and consequently they continue to live in desperate condition. These people are also mostly illiterate and still stick to such social practices, like child labor and child marriage that are frowned upon by the rest of India. These practices contribute towards the prevailing low literacy rate. This project aims to assist in educating the future generations with the hope of one day achieving sustainable community development. The program offers volunteers the chance to be part of this noble effort by teaching local children English and other subjects. Through your help, and the love and the support you’ll provide, young children will feel confident and will start to dream of a better future and work towards it.
Highlights of the program
You’ll work as assistant volunteer teachers in the schools. You can also become involved in teaching children, generate awareness on issues of health and sanitation, teach drawing and paintings and participate in language class. As part of the program, you’ll also have opportunity to enroll in Golden Triangle Tour, where you’ll come across Taj Mahal, symbol of eternal beauty.
Project Location
This volunteer program is organized in Delhi and Jaipur. Delhi with its 13 million inhabitants is the India’s capital and contains a mix of old and new and is spread over a huge area. The city is divided in two parts: Old Delhi with its pulsating life through the crowded bazaars – and New Delhi, India’s modern capital, with Green Boulevard, large office blocks, the parliament etc. Jaipur is a popular place for tourists and contains many forts, palaces and buildings. It’s also a thriving economic center.Â
Field Conditions
The accommodation is basic but clean and located within easy access of the city and the project sites. Volunteers will be sharing rooms while staying in the hostel. The hostel has electricity, running water and volunteers will have access to internet and phone facilities within walking distance. Your country coordinator will help you if required any travel information.
During the project, you’ll mostly stay with a host family. There, you’ll find a warm and welcoming family and they’ll treat you as one of their family members. This will also provide volunteers with a wonderful opportunity to learn about the local culture and practice your newly acquired skills in Hindi language, though at least one member of the family will be able to speak in English. |
